Fifth planet from the Sun.
Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System—more than twice as massive than all the other planets combined. It’s a swirling gaseous world made primarily of hydrogen and helium with no solid surface. It takes 12 Earth years to complete one trip around the Sun, and while it’s the largest planet in the Solar System, it has the shortest day of all at just 10 hours! That rapid rotation fuels the powerful storms we know it for, like the famous Great Red Spot.
Did you know: Jupiter’s gravitational influence has helped keep Earth (and the rest of the inner Solar System) relatively safe from asteroids, allowing life to persist.
