Eris

Designation

Dwarf planet beyond the Kuiper Belt.

Eris is slightly smaller than Pluto but more massive. It’s so distant that sunlight takes over 9 hours to reach it. Eris’s surface is likely covered in frozen methane, and its orbit takes a whopping 558 Earth years to complete.

Did you know: Eris was the catalyst for Pluto’s reclassification in 2006. It’s named after the Greek goddess of discord, a nod to the debate it sparked among astronomers.
