Ceres

Designation

Dwarf planet in the asteroid belt.

Ceres is the largest object in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and the only dwarf planet in the inner Solar System. Ceres may have briny water deep below its surface and it shows signs of past (and possibly present) geological activity. It orbits the Sun in 4.6 Earth years.

Did you know: Ceres has bright spots now known to be salt deposits that were left behind as briny liquid seeped up and evaporated.
